Washington
County Dive Rescue (WCDR) consists of 10 members, who are primarily volunteers.
The team is sponsored and managed by WVAS. WCDR responds to
any water related emergency in Washington County, Maryland and first
response areas in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The team has a vehicle/boat
combination and a dive trailer with another vehicle available when needed.
Washington County, Maryland is bordered on the south
and east portions of the county by the Potomac River. Here, the Potomac
separates Maryland
from West Virginia and several large bridges cross the Potomac, including
that of Interstate 81. The C&O Canal Trail (managed by the US Park
Service) parallels the Potomac through this county and brings large numbers
of people in proximity to the Potomac throughout the year. The River
is navigable by small boats and has significant traffic in the spring
and summer. Several smaller rivers, a lake, a few quarries and many farm
ponds are also within the county borders.
In-water training is conducted at least monthly with classroom training
as needed.
