A SHELF SIDING

The nature of a shelf nicely accomodates track sidings, being long and narrow. This one contains the fairly typical siding of Paramount and is about six feet long, a few inches wide on the right growing to 24 inches, about as wide as any should be.

The track along the front edge is the main line going down to the next level on the left. The diagram shows the siding branching off to the back and then branching again to provide a passing track so that the locomotive can get at the other end of its cars. Near the road in the picture are seen three dead-end sidings serving four different industries. In addition, an extension of the back track on the left (see diagram) circles around on its own small shelf to access another industry at Security.

Given its design, this siding can be serviced by trains approaching from either direction on the main line. And while its industries need their car placement pushed from only one direction, other shelf-sidings on the layout require maneuvering for both.
